Kenpo is like mastering poker

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({ google_ad_client: "ca-pub-2659328231231944", enable_page_level_ads: true }); A few jobs back, I worked for a company that had a poker table onsite. Needless to say we played a lot of cards during our free time; even coming up with creative ways to make free time.  The game of choice was Texas Hold-em, and it came with a painful learning curve.  Looking back though I … Read entire article »

Whatever the attitude, so the response – Bullying

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({ google_ad_client: "ca-pub-2659328231231944", enable_page_level_ads: true }); Everyone has heard of the Golden Rule.  (Not the corporate golden rule of “He, who has the gold, makes the rules)  But the real Golden Rule: “Do unto others as you would have done unto you.”  Kenpo has a similar philosophy “Whatever the attitude, so the response”.  The interpretation is multidirectional, and generally means “If I treat … Read entire article »

Willpower is the hammer that drives the action

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({ google_ad_client: "ca-pub-2659328231231944", enable_page_level_ads: true }); While in Oklahoma a couple of weekends ago for the Disciple Martial Arts Fall Festival, I had the opportunity to spar with my instructor Damian Wilson.  We hadn’t had the opportunity to put the pads on together since I received my Brown Belt in early October.  I was eager to see how I’d progressed in his eyes.  … Read entire article »

Brawl Demonstrations

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({ google_ad_client: "ca-pub-2659328231231944", enable_page_level_ads: true }); Without question the highlight of the demos put on at the Fall Festival were the two “Brawls”.  Each Brawl was a choreographed set of attacks and defense techniques that flowed together very well.  The Brawls were practiced in the Disciple Martial Arts dojo.  Translating them to the smaller stage turned out to be quite interesting. The Kids Brawl was performed by the higher ranking Juniors from Disciple Martial Arts as well as my two girls.  Each student was the good guy and bad guy in three techniques.  They did outstanding and received a huge applause for the work they put in. Sparring Black Belts

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({ google_ad_client: "ca-pub-2659328231231944", enable_page_level_ads: true }); One of the goals I had in going to the Disciple Martial Arts Fall Festival this year was getting a chance to spar with some of the black belts who were also going to be there.  My instructor, Mr. Damian Wilson, was more than happy to oblige.  Mr. Allen Gowdey and Mr. Colin Duffy were also there and able to put the pads on with me. Enough praise can’t be given to these gentlemen who are some of the best fighters the AKF has produced.  Every time I get into the ring with them I know that I will be a better Kenpoist for it.  Having watched these videos a few times already, there’s quite a … Read entire article »

Demos at Fall Festival

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({ google_ad_client: "ca-pub-2659328231231944", enable_page_level_ads: true }); Saturday November 6, 2010 was the Fall Festival at Disciple Martial Arts in Edmond, OK.  Instructor Mr. Damian Wilson asked us to be a part of his demonstrations and also to come up with our own to help his event.  It was a year ago at his Fall Festival in 2009 where my passion for Kenpo was rekindled.  There was no way we were passing on the opportunity since we were already going to be there for the girls’ stripe test. I performed Poison Hands (Finger Set) Short Form 3.  This is the combination I used when competing at the Big D tournament back in March. Second Blue Stripe Kiss of the Dragon

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({ google_ad_client: "ca-pub-2659328231231944", enable_page_level_ads: true }); One of the Kenpo traditions is to earn your stripe or belt promotion through the Kiss of the Dragon.  At the end of the test, each person testing takes a kick without blocking from the instructors administering the test.  The strength of the kick is determined by the age of the person testing and the rank they are testing for.  Young kids and low ranks are not kicked hard. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({ google_ad_client: "ca-pub-2659328231231944", enable_page_level_ads: true }); After the sparring portion of the test Friday November 5, 2010 at Disciple Martial Arts, my two girls received their 2nd blue stripe and Kiss of … Read entire article »

2nd Blue Stripe Sparring Test

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({ google_ad_client: "ca-pub-2659328231231944", enable_page_level_ads: true }); Serra and Emalee tested on Friday, November 5, 2010 for their second blue belt stripe in the junior curriculum.  We drove up to Disciple Martial Arts in Edmond, OK so they could test with instructor Damian Wilson in part because I don’t want to test my own girls.  But also because there are quite a few other, really good students their own age they can work techniques with and spar against.  Below is a video of some of their sparring matches. Serra sparred 5 matches in total and Emalee sparred 3.  They wound up sparring each other in a classic turn of events.  What you see in that match is very similar to how it … Read entire article »

Our School

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({ google_ad_client: "ca-pub-2659328231231944", enable_page_level_ads: true }); Bowley Kenpo Karate operates out of our home garage in McKinney, Texas.  It’s certainly not a large school with only 12 x 18 worth of mat space.  There’s a fridge and deep freeze “leasing” space out of the same garage.  They’re good neighbors through for providing cold drinks. Because we operate out of a garage, we aren’t the … Read entire article »
