Karate Drills: Bad Guy Won’t Die

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({ google_ad_client: "ca-pub-2659328231231944", enable_page_level_ads: true }); One of the karate drills we like to use, especially for belt and stripe tests, is Bad Guy Won’t Die. In this exercise, students run a series of back-to-back techniques against an opponent who won’t seem to stay down. Usually it’s 5 techniques strung together, though for higher ranks 10 is good too. We’ve found, kids work their techniques better on adults due to being able to hit harder (hitting with intent). In Kenpo karate, students testing for intermediate and advanced belt ranks are often asked to create their own forms built from techniques. These are techniques each student has created. Bad Guy Won’t Die is a good precursor to that concept. While … Read entire article »

My Green Belt Test

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({ google_ad_client: "ca-pub-2659328231231944", enable_page_level_ads: true }); My daughter, Serra, age 13 has been doing Kenpo with me since she just turning 10. Serra learns in our school, helps teach the kids class, and has trained (and sparred) with most of the black belts in Mr. Duffy’s American Kenpo Federation. She’s worked hard and has developed into her own martial artist. Back in November … Read entire article »

Trying new sparring styles

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({ google_ad_client: "ca-pub-2659328231231944", enable_page_level_ads: true }); During a recent Saturday sparring class at our school, we were visited by Mr. Johnny Guzman, a black belt from Mr. Duffy’s Kenpo school in Austin. He fought all of us with a sparring style I hadn’t seen before. Mr. Guzman would stay in a much closer range then you’d traditionally see, and he’d keep his front hand or forearm pressed against his opponent’s front arm. It acted as almost a radar, measuring the distance between him and his opponent. If the opponent moved to go right, he’d slip his front hand in for a quick rib shot. If the opponent moved to the left, it acted as a trigger, allowing him … Read entire article »

Sparring Multiple Attackers – Videos

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({ google_ad_client: "ca-pub-2659328231231944", enable_page_level_ads: true }); Sparring with multiple opponents is a drill you begin to practice further down your path as a martial artist. Ideally, you should first be comfortable with your skill to defend yourself one-on-one before moving to two-on-one and three-on-one. When you’re ready though, these drills provide a huge adrenaline rush. Remember though, this type of fighting is a drill. In a fight-or-flight scenario, fighting multiple opponents is almost always a no-win situation. The longer you engage multiple attackers, the larger the likelihood of getting injured. Your goal is to survive long enough to flee. When the opening is available to escape, take it. Some of the items we work on when we practice this … Read entire article »

Demos and Sparring at Disciple Martial Arts Fall Festival

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({ google_ad_client: "ca-pub-2659328231231944", enable_page_level_ads: true }); In early November, a few students of Bowley Kenpo Karate participated in demos at the Disciple Martial Arts Fall Festival.  It’s a great event we are thrilled to support.  Kids and adults did a mix of forms and “Bad Guy Won’t Die” techniques. The night prior to the demo was a belt test for all the junior students. Following are a few videos from the demo. The first video shows all the junior students doing Short Form 2, Long Form 1, Short Form 1, and Linear Short Form 1 choreographed together. In this video, adults as attackers where the kids have to do 5 techniques. The drill is called “Bad Guy Won’t Die” and each … Read entire article »

Brawl Demonstrations

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({ google_ad_client: "ca-pub-2659328231231944", enable_page_level_ads: true }); Without question the highlight of the demos put on at the Fall Festival were the two “Brawls”.  Each Brawl was a choreographed set of attacks and defense techniques that flowed together very well.  The Brawls were practiced in the Disciple Martial Arts dojo.  Translating them to the smaller stage turned out to be quite interesting. The Kids Brawl was performed by the higher ranking Juniors from Disciple Martial Arts as well as my two girls.  Each student was the good guy and bad guy in three techniques.  They did outstanding and received a huge applause for the work they put in.
