Targeting and Reflex Drill

Plagiarism is the sincerest form of flattery. We stole this drill from seeing it on Mr. Bob White‘s Facebook post a while back.

Hit the bag between the swings of the rope.

In the drill, someone holds a kicking shield, a second person swings a jump rope in front of the kicking shield, and a third person tries to hit the kicking shield between the swings of the jump rope.

The goal is to hit the bag on target, with power, and not get your arm or foot wrapped up with the jump rope. Generally, we run the drill with lines of students, and each student gets 5 attempts before heading to the end of the line. Every time the striking student gets through successfully, the rope swinger increase the speed a little.

Depending on the class size, we try to run through front hand punch, rear hand punch, front leg snapping ball kick, and rear leg snapping ball leg kick. Repeat for right and left side of the body. Just about everyone’s weaker side is slower, jump ropes get wrapped up on the appendage, and giggling ensues.

In this class, we also talk about how this drill relates to sparring. The students understand the interval between the rope swings is akin to an opponent flashing an opening or target during a fight. You only have a short window to see the target and react to it.

Below is a quick, one minute video from our kids class doing the drill.
